AliveCor Inc. announced that it has received clearance from the FDA for an algorithm designed to detect atrial fibrillation using a mobile device.

The algorithm detects AF using real-time ECG measurements taken via the mobile phone-based AliveCor Heart Monitor. This app, available for iPhones and most Android devices, records, stores, displays and transfers ECG data, allowing physicians to act before the onset of a potentially life-threatening condition, according to a company press release.

“The ability to automatically detect serious heart arrhythmia using mobile technology has the potential to save lives, reduce health care costs and allow patients and their caregivers to make informed decision about cardiac care,” Euan Thomson, president and CEO of the company, said in the release. “Having achieved clearance, we will work to incorporate the algorithm in our app and plan to make this available to customers during September.”
