In 2015, the Winter School of the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM) took place in Riga from 25 to 31 January. Fourty-four internal medicine residents from 20 countries gathered in Riga, from Finland to Morocco and from Portugal to Russia. The opening of the school took place on 26 January. Welcoming remarks were made by the President of the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM), Professor Frank Bosch (Netherlands), director of the Winter School ESIM Professor Aivars Lejnieks (Latvia) and Young Internists Secretary of the Winter School Ieva Ruza (Latvia). Classes are held daily from 9.00 to 17.30. Educational school work was presented in 16 lectures, 4 seminars, one clinical and pathological-anatomical conference and 24 presentations of clinical cases. The presentations were of a high quality ranging from heavy metal poisoning to multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN). Among the lecturers were leading specialists of Internal Medicine - Frank Bosch (Netherlands), Chris Davidson (UK), Verena Briner (Switzerland), Shirley Rigby (United Kingdom), Marcus Lember (Estonia), Valentin Kokorin (Russia) and representatives of Young Internists EFIM - Frauke Vedans (UK), Ieva Ruza (Latvia), Alexis Mueller-Marbach (Germany).
We attended lessons in general internal medicine, dedicated to clinical updates, recognition and management of various medical conditions, and issues surrounding medical ethics. The programme for the week is a tried and tested formula of lectures, workshops and case presentations. We learned together about lymphoma and coeliac disease, endocrine puzzles and syncope. We discussed how to spot the deteriorating patient and how to get published, explored abdominal ultrasound and end-of-life decision-making.
